Providing services in the Region

Contraceptive prevalence rates in AWR range from 8% in Mauritania to 64% in Algeria. But half of all countries in the region have a rate of less than 40%. Funding cuts have forced some MAs to close their clinics, whilst expansion of government programs in other countries has led to an increase in access to SRH services and modern contraceptive. Even so, MAs continue to be a major national source for the supply of contraceptives, particularly in very low prevalence countries. Rural populations in the region are still greatly underserved and there are pockets of need in urban areas even in higher prevalence countries.

AWRO provides services to 1.2 million people through:

1921 service delivery points (MAs and partners);
644 MA static clinics;
14 mobile clinics/teams; and
1263 community based sites.

AWRO is fully involved in the IPPF Quality of Care (QoC) initiative, increasing the human, financial, clinical and institutional capacity of more than 50 service delivery points to deliver reproductive health services of the highest quality. AWRO plans to expand the QoC project to include all the MAs in the region, institutionalizing it as a regional strategy in all programs and activities, transferring experiences in-country to the public and private sectors, developing partnerships with governments, other donors, and NGOs and advocating QoC as a client right and provider need.
